The cost of everything seems to be up, especially gas, but travel expert Chris Elliott gives families hope with valuable and timely advice for this years family travel plans.

My top three takeaways from this interview:

  • Beware of airline fees. Elliot says extra charges can double the cost of airfare. Crazy! He recommends staying at an InterContinental Hotel while they are offering $100 toward checked bag fees.
  • Timing is everything. Save hundreds if not thousands of dollars by visiting favorite tourist destinations when everyone else is at home. (This tip is best utilized by families with pre-school aged children!)
  • Travel agents are making a comeback. Looking for deals online is time-consuming. If you find a good travel agent, hold on tight!
