"Experts will hold tight to their philosophies of parenting long enough to sell their latest book, but the real parents know that grace and understanding will shape you into the parent you need to be." - Linsey Knerl, Parenting Squad
Born and raised in a small Nebraska town, Linsey Knerl experienced first-hand just how complicated the “simple life” could be. Staying on-budget wasn’t just a desire in the family-farming business, it was a survival skill that Linsey acquired early on. Going out on her own at age 17, she lived just one year of college life before jumping into the business world for some hands-on experience. Often working several jobs at once, her favorite opportunities included managing a fast-food restaurant and assisting in a dermatology clinic.
She finally found a home at an Omaha overpayment/subrogation consulting firm in 1999, where she climbed from the rank of secretary to Executive Assistant/Project Manager in just three years. This new career gave her the rare chance to participate in a Business Leadership Academy, where she received one-on-one mentoring, real-life experience in public speaking and teaching, and eventually discovered her calling to write and educate those like her on the opportunities that the financial realm had to offer.
Her marriage in 2002 gave her a perfect excuse for a much-needed break, where she was soon blessed with a total of four children and the chance to move back to her childhood home. Shedding suits and expense reports for homeschool curriculum and pickle recipes, Linsey enjoyed rediscovering her roots and realizing the comforts that farm life provided for her family. She wasn’t content to stay homebound, however. After trying for a year to kick-start a freelance writing career, Linsey tried her hand at blogging. The result has been a surprising and exciting journey that has led to her role as a Senior Writer for Wise Bread and Parenting Squad, a consumer advocacy role at Consupo.com, corporate communications gigs at companies like Red Plum, and an open door into consumer publications on topics ranging from food to farming.
Her work has recently been featured on the MSN home page, The Real Life Survival Guide, and the MSN Smart Money Spending blog and has been linked to from the New York Times, Mental Floss, LifeHacker, The Consumerist, The Ross Blog, and The Simple Dollar.
In addition to her passion for piano and dance, Linsey appreciates the contrast between city excitement and country tranquility. She would admittedly rather kiss boo-boos than fold laundry, and enjoys political banter and action movies on those rare nights when the kids go to bed on time.
