There is a subtle and not so obvious danger slowly interfering with the wellbeing of our children. The early symptoms show as fatigue, foggy thinking, restless sleeping, aches and pains and often a niggling illness that won't go away.

The culprit can't be seen nor felt, yet overtime it puts a consistent low level stress on our immune system. The danger of course is radiation (emr - electromagnetic radiation) the invisible frequency that is emitted from all things electrical. Yep, you got it our electrical gadgets which we love.

After 10 years of facilitating workshops and consulting on Holistic Feng Shui (in a past life) it soon became obvious that electrical appliances were not a healthy addition to any child's or adult's bedroom. In fact the bedroom is probably the only place in the home where we can consciously reduce our exposure.

For many years I used a gadget called a cell censor which measures the frequencies being emitted from all things electrical such as light switches, fans, lighting, tv's, microwaves (emitt up to a 6 feet even when not in use) dishwashers, digital clocks, hairdryers, x-boxes, computers, sound systems, phone chargers etc. Very rarely did an electrical appliance register zero.

For those parents keen to learn more there is over 20 years of research which you can read about from the links provided below. Even though they are not 100% conclusive there is certainly enough very strong data and information to get you to seriously thinking.

Five easy ways to reduce the electrical overload in your children's bedroom:

1. Check to see if anyone is sleeping against the adjoining wall which houses the electrical power box for your home. Unless the power box is particularly well encassed with thick steel then I would personally move the bed.

Over the years my cell censor has shown that the frequencies emitted from power boxes can radiate up to eight feet and that includes traveling through a wall.

2. Remove everything electrical within arms reach of your child's head. If you must have electrical stuff in your child's room then please move it as far away from their head as possible. This includes extension cords running under the bed.

3. Flick them off. If you just can't do without the TV or music system or x-box in your child's room then at least get them into the habit of flicking it off at the wall when not in use.

Appliances on stand-by can still consume up to 40% of power. Apart from saving energy it is highly recommended to switch off all electrical appliances at the wall at night. I guarantee you will notice a change in your next electrical bill.

4. Switch to a battery operated clock. Use a torch instead of a bedside lamp. At first there may not appear to be any options other than using electricity but believe me when you put your mind to it the options will appear.

5. Relocate as many electrical items as possible from the bedroom into other living spaces. Often teenagers rooms can be filled with chargers such as ipod and phone chargers, sound systems, game consoles, TV and the list goes on. Whilst one electrical gadget on its own may not be a problem 3, 4 or 5 will all add up.
