Unless you live in Alaska, it's H-O-T outside right now. The summer heat wave is upon most of the country, and we're all sweltering. Sure, we can get some relief by hitting the pool or hiding out in the air conditioning, but there's another way that we adults can beat the heat. Take advantage of the summer sun and mix up some of your favorite ice-cold, adults-only beverages!
1. Frozen margaritas
I usually like my margaritas on the rocks, but the frozen variety is a welcome treat on a hot day. Get creative with fruity summer flavors and try your hand at whipping up the mango or watermelon variety.
2. Iced Tea
Iced tea isn't an adults-only beverage, but it is a refreshing choice during a summer heat wave. Use the power of the summer sun to make sun tea, or choose iced green tea and receive some amazing benefits to your health. Plus, there's always the option to spike your tea and make it a Long Island...
A dirty banana most definitely is an adult drink. I first had one of these creamy concoctions on my honeymoon in the Bahamas, but apparently the drink is a Jamaican specialty. Either way it's delicious, and who wouldn't love a drink with such a fun name?
These aren't your typical jello shots — you make them inside of fresh strawberries, and then top them with whipped cream. (Warning: you may want to get a babysitter if you're planning to indulge.)
I'm a Kentucky girl, so any drink made with bourbon is one I can't miss. And since we're in the height of peach season, this Peach and Blackberry Muddle from Martha Stewart totally qualifies as "eating seasonally." Get local peaches and you'll be "eating locally" too!
The national cocktail of Brazil, caipirinhas are made by muddling sugar and limes, and then shaking them together with ice and a Brazilian liquor known as Cachaca. Think margaritas, but better. And stronger. A lot stronger.
Sangria is great because you can make it without a recipe, or when you need to stretch a bottle of wine. You can make red sangria, or white sangria, or even non-alcoholic sangria. You can also toss in just about any type of fruit you like (or happen to have sitting around your kitchen).
Beer can be boring, but it doesn't have to be. After all, nothing says summer like a beer and a barbecue, so check out this list of 6 great summer brews to enjoy before the weather changes.
You can't sell this one at your kid's lemonade stand! Food Network star Sunny Anderson combines homemade lemonade with vanilla-infused vodka to make this refreshing summer drink that is strictly an adults-only pleasure.
10. Cocktail popsicles
Yes, I said popsicles. Cocktail popsicles, like this Cherry Apple Whiskey Sour one, are trendy. They sound fun, but, then again, do we really want to go to the trouble of keeping the kids out of "Mommy's special popsicles?" Probably not.
11. Gin and Tonic
It's fun to experiment with trendy new drink recipes, but sometimes all you need is an old standby. Combine gin, tonic water, and a lime wedge for an instant summer classic.
What's your favorite summer drink recipe?
