So, I broke it to my kids that a same sex family wedding is about to occur. My kids, the poor dears, have been in at least three weddings in their short lives. They've gone to at least twice that many as guests. And by mid summer, they are a little tuckered out. So, it was completely natural and inevitable that they'd ask, uhm mom? Are we done for the year?
They know as much about weddings as preschoolers can , I think. They know they consist by and large of cake eating, food they don't like, dancing, people they don't know patting them on the head and more cake and more dancing.
Not quite, I said. Grandma Lynn and Grandma Lydia are getting married when we get back from vacation. I wasn't sure what the reaction would be. I mean, we are healthy as all get out about all sorts of things but still my three year old can be stubborn and say random things about boys not playing dolls and girls not playing Star Wars. My son, I figured, might be able to think more abstractly--after all, he still wants to wear my lipstick and listens to glam rock and doesn't understand why bullies have to exist.
My son was silent. Nothing seemed to phase the 5 year old with Velvet Underground on his iPod playlist. But Paloma looked at us and passed us, deep in thought.
"They can't get married," Paloma yelled, her hands folded upon her chest. There was no backing down.
"Why Paloma? Why don't you want the grandmas to get married?"
"I want them to get married , but they can't."
"Why?"
"Because they don't have any dresses. Weddings have to have dresses. Grandma Lynn and Lydia wear pants."
So what was I to do? I explained to Paloma that even if one has no fashion sense whatsoever, one can still get married. The grandmas can't help themselves, Paloma, they've bought stock in Land's End and L.L. Bean. With this turtleneck, I thee wed. You don't need dresses, I explained to my daughter, you just need love.
Okay, she said. But she looked like she didn't believe me. They're going to have a cake though, right mommy?
"Yes on cake."
"Good." And that was that.
