If you’ve been sending your kids to school with a packed lunch, there’s something you should know. Your child may not be eating any of the food you send with them. I remember trading for things I couldn’t get at home (my Mom was strictly anti-refined sugars with all her meals). I craved a fruit snack, yearned for pudding cups, and begged for salty snacks. Chances are good that your kid is doing the same.
When Team Mom sent me samples from the new Warner Bros. Looney Toons Eating Right Kids line of foods, it was apparent right away that they were cute. Single-sized servings of pasta, juice, and snacks were ready to eat, and were adorned with the characters we all remember from childhood (Bugs Bunny, Tweety Bird, Sylvester and the gang). I sampled each of the items along with some kid testers to get a feel for whether they held any kid appeal beyond the packaging. Here are our results:
Eating Right Kids Chewy Bars - These were a basic granola and fruit bar, with a chocolate coating on one side. Just sweet enough, they would make a good dessert, breakfast, in-between meals, or candy bar substitution. Our kid testers gobbled them up, and I was pleased to find no high fructose corn syrup in the ingredients.
Eating Right Kids Fruit Cups - There really wasn’t anything spectacular about these fruit cups. They were pretty much what you would expect. The kids ate them about as well as any fruit cup (although one decided to pick out all the cherries in the Mixed Fruit variety). With 100% of a kid’s recommended Vitamin C and only all-natural sweeteners, they were the right size for your average kiddo.
Eating Right Kids Canned Pasta - Just like you’d expect from a ready-to-eat serving of pasta, the Whole Wheat Cheese Ravioli in Sauce was hot in minutes from the microwave. (It came in a single-serving microwaveable container.) Not as flavorful as traditional canned ravioli, I didn’t care for them too much. The kids, on the other hand, enjoyed the pasta with their unspoiled palates and ate them within minutes.
Made exclusively for Safeway stores, the Eating Right Kids products have the right idea - healthier options without the stigma of sending poor Sally to school with your homemade wheat germ and carob balls. Most kids will find it cool enough to eat, and parents won’t have guilty feelings about it afterward.
Would you buy a product like this for your school lunch boxes? What makes a food “healthy” enough for your kids? We’d love to hear your ideas!
