Our budget takes a bit of a hit during the holidays. So when January rolls around, it’s time to regroup and spend less money. But we still need food and we still need supplies. Here’s what to buy now to make sure you get the best price on the items you’ll need in 2016.

1. Furniture

Who wants to spend thousands on furniture when there’s such a high chance of a child coloring on it, peeing on it, or vomiting on it? Plus there’s always the damage a family pet can do. Since new furniture styles will arrive in stores in February, the models in the showroom will need to be moved out. That means discounts for you. Now’s your chance to get that new sofa.

2. Winter Veggies and Fruits

You might have your favorite fruits and veggies that you always go for, but prices change with the seasons. So it’s helpful to your budget to buy based on the season. Plus, it gives your kids the chance to try new foods. Right now, go for carrots, clementines, grapefruit, kale, kiwi, oranges, potatoes, spinach, celery, and artichoke.

3. Bed Linens

Thinking of finally upgrading those old sheets? Now’s the time for the annual white sale on bed and bath linens that has been happening every year since 1878. It’s the best deal of the year.

4. Outdoor Gear

Now’s the time to prep for your spring or summer camping trip. Not too many people shop for these items until they need them, so now is the time when you can get the best prices on tents, stoves, backpacks, and other gear.

5. Health-Related Items

It’s January and stores know that you are looking to make some resolutions. One of the most common resolutions is to be healthier. Now’s the time to buy the gear that will help you achieve that goal.

6. Winter Coats

It’s a great time to shop for new winter coats for your kids. If you like to plan ahead, buy coats a size or two up for next year and save big.

7. Air Conditioners

It’s cold now, sure. But in a few months, you’ll be sweating. Head to the store now to buy those air conditioners before demand drives the prices up, up, up.

With a little bit of planning, you can save big bucks in January.
