It may seem like the fall season is just beginning, but before we know it we'll be knee deep in the hustle and bustle of the holidays. Autumn is the perfect time of year to get outdoors with the kids. It's not as muddy as spring, not as hot as summer, and not as painfully cold as winter can be. Be sure to have plenty of fall fun before the season passes you by.

  1. Go for a hike and take in the beautiful colors of autumn.
  2. Go apple picking and use your collection to bake pies and muffins or make juice or apple sauce.
  3. Go on a scavenger hunt for all things fall from acorns to orange-colored leaves.
  4. Visit the beach. You don't need to swim to enjoy the beach. Just spend some time in the cool breeze building castles one more time before the snow falls.
  5. Animal watch. Head to the park or nature trails to watch the animals scurry around as they prepare for winter. You can also watch the geese head south.
  6. Take some beautiful outdoor pictures of the kids dressed in fall colors with the changing leaves as a backdrop. These will make great holiday card photos.
  7. Visit your local amusement park. Some are open year round or until winter. You'll be avoiding the crowds of summer.
  8. Take a nature hike with a guide who can teach you about your local terrain.
  9. Make a pinecone birdfeeder with the kids, just like you did when you were young.
  10. Camp out in the backyard one more time. The weather is perfect for a cozy fire — as long as you follow safety rules.
  11. Go fishing with kids. You wanted to all summer and now is a great time to finally go.
  12. Make artwork with the kids to decorate your home using items you gather on a scavenger hunt.
  13. Visit a corn maze and get lost in the tall corn with your kiddos.
  14. Go for a hayride. It's itchy but kids love it.
  15. Make a yummy soup like Black Bean with some corn bread muffins. Yum.
  16. Visit a pumpkin patch.
  17. Make a fall scrapbook of your autumn adventures.
