Great Ideas
Submitted by Fred Lee on April 26, 2008 - 10:31.
Hi Fred,
Fred Here. Gardening is a great thing for kids to do, and I think your article went a long way to promoting this idea. Nice job. As we all know, kids are fascinated by nature, as well they should be, and there is no better way to introduce the wonder of it all than a garden. I myself am still blown away by how a seed transforms into a plant.
Gardens are also a nice way to introduce to kids an awareness of the change in seasons, not to mention a way to get them outside... and dirty. Kids should get dirty. Have you read "Last Child In The Woods," by Richard Louv? Great read. He talks a lot about how essential it is for kids to get outside and into nature.
I couldn't agree more, and the proof is in the pudding. Kids love it outside.
One thing we've found that the kids love is sprouting the seeds inside, where the kids can really get a good look at the magical metamorphosis. This in turns makes planting more efficient, I believe. I'm no expert, I think I read this somewhere.
Either way, great article. I couldn't agree more on the value of kids having a garden.
