The Purpose of Education
Submitted by Fred Lee on April 12, 2008 - 10:19.
This article touches on an important issue in education, that of performance vs. learning. While I agree that students and parents have a sense of entitlement that hinders the educational process, it begs the question of what the purpose of that process is. Should student be encouraged to learn for the sake of learning, or should they be encouraged to perform? While grades should be an indicator of how smart or knowledgeable a student is, should they be the sole purpose of going to school, or does education have a larger purpose?
These are difficult issues to confront and make the topic of schools a complex one. Thanks for your interesting article, it made me think a lot about schooling. Then again, what parent doesn't?
