Parenting doesn't come easy -- or cheap! Now, finally, your son or daughter is in the final year of high school — and you are beginning to realize the bills are still adding up — and fast. Between pictures and graduation, homecoming and prom, how much is that last year of high school going to run in terms of dollars and cents?Posted September 27, 2009 - 10:02 by Lain Ehmann
I’m all for the arts. I try encourage my kids to express themselves: I hang all their “masterpieces” on the fridge, I listen to their kazoo solos, and I even let them play with Play-Doh (though I hate the stuff). But I had to balk when my nine-year-old told me she wanted to play the piano. It wasn’t the playing, per se. It was the learning. Why is it so darned expensive to hire a piano teacher?Posted August 16, 2009 - 19:32 by Julie Rains
I organized a whitewater rafting trip for my son’s scout troop recently. Such outings can be challenging and help kids mature. I've always been easy on my two little girls, but recently it occurred to me that I've been a little too easy on them. I play the part of the good cop, my wife teaching them more about life than I do. And I finally came to realize the other day that I may just have to start beating them. I'm talking, of course, about competitive games.Posted December 1, 2008 - 00:24 by Margaret Garcia-Couoh

In thinking about all the things I want to do before I die, I realized there were just as many, if not more, to do with/for my kids before I kicked the bucket.Posted April 25, 2008 - 11:04 by Julie Rains
I’ll admit that as the mom of 2 male children and no female ones, I sometimes feel invalidated in my motherhood. Am I being overly sensitive or is there a bias against moms with sons?Posted March 11, 2008 - 06:05 by Catherine Shaffer
When my son began Suzuki violin training at the age of five, a lot of people asked me why I was "forcing" violin lessons on him at such a young age. The very fact that our society views violin lessons as unnecessary torture is telling. However, the truth is that at that time my son totally agreed with it, and would have rather spent his time doing other things. So why did we persist?Posted January 6, 2008 - 13:58 by Linsey Knerl
One of the downsides to educating your children at home is the expense. Shockingly, however, there are also some big financial advantages to homeschooling that often come in the form of discounts to places you may not have been able to visit otherwise. Here are a few of the many types of businesses that are trying to woo the homeschool crowd with up to 50% off on their goods and services.Posted December 17, 2007 - 06:19 by Linsey Knerl
Many parents I have met love the idea of home education. Despite their belief in the process, however, they often close the door on the opportunity due to concern that their child won’t be able to fully participate in all that the world of sports has to offer. This year’s award of the Heisman Trophy to homeschooler Tim Tebow has opened the minds of many to the options available for those parents wanting the best of both worlds.luigi
