It has become obvious that America, one of the richest places in the world, is fat. And if the poorest of our nation is suffering from obesity, then we know it isn't just the amount of food we eat, but what's inside the food. With a new awareness on the importance of whole grains, organic, fresh, seasonal ingredients, let's look at how some of our old habits may have affected our health.

Some clinical doctors don't believe in Candida as the problem holistic naturepaths do. So let me start off by warning you, I don't usually trust doctors; I trust my body and what it tells me. I want to give you the research that I've read that has made a difference in my personal health, and you can take it or leave it. The “cure” to Candida is simple, cheap (if not free), and fast. If you're wondering, “What is Candida and why is this on a parenting website?" let me explain.

What is Candida?

Candida is a yeast that lives inside our bodies. Under normal circumstances, it lives in perfect harmony with the rest of our system. But you give a yeast an inch, and you're screwing up the entire digestive tract. Symptoms of Candida Overgrowth are as vast and varied as they come. From allergies, to eczema, to headaches, lethargy, alcohol cravings, weight gain, the list goes on. You can read more about symptoms at Holistic Health Solutions. There are tests to see if Candida is over-running your system, but I believe they're mostly, unnecessary.

What causes Candida Overgrowth?

Many things are believed to cause Candida Overgrowth. The list includes alcohol, coffee, lack of sleep, stress, white breads, sugar, antibiotics (found in food as well as prescribed), hormones (birth control, replacement treatments, and what is found in food), amalgam dental fillings, chlorinated water...etc, etc. Reading this list, it becomes understandable that some estimates have up to 75% of the American public with Candida Overgrowth.

Why is Candida Overgrowth on a parenting site?

As a parent, I find that when I'm off my game, I'm a mess. I get disconnected and uninterested in what my kids are doing. And really, being a parent is being an athlete. If I stay up late, sleep in, eat bad food, I'm a lousy mom. I just don't have the energy to meal plan, play, read, run, create, dance, keep the baby out of the dog food, and just be silly. It's a marathon, and days get long when I'm feeling sluggish and foggy. Also, I think as parents, we need to be more aware about what's in our children's food and more importantly, how it may be affecting them. An interesting note, what causes lethargy in adults also causes hyperactivity in kids. Talk about a fatal combination.

How do we kill it?

There are intensive cleanses you can do. But before you go haywire, just know there's an easy solution: take acidophilus, also known as yogurt. Plain is best, and hormone free. Avoid sugars because that's what got you into this mess to begin with. If you'd like, you can take a live culture supplement. The refrigerated kind is the best for retaining the live cultures, so I hear. Also, if you can stand it, take apple cider vinegar every morning in a glass of water. Just mix two teaspoons and chug it down. I take it three times a day when I really need the help. Some swear (I'm one of them) that you won't get sick if you take it through flu and cold season religiously. I like the Bragg's Organic brand. It will keep you regular and flush you out.

Another way, if you don't want a supplement, is to cut out all sugars, alcohol, caffeine, carbohydrates, yeast...you get the picture. See why supplementing is so attractive?

Holistic Health Solutions is a great website if you want to do your own research. It also has a spit test (yes I said spit), to see if you may have Candida Overgrowth. Good luck, and I hope you find this information useful!
