When you get done with that long-awaited and much overdue spring cleaning of your house, sit down and get comfy with your smartphone, tablet, and laptop. It’s time to do a little digital spring cleaning. Your devices work overtime to keep you connected and it’s time for you to give those devices a sprucing up. Here are all the reasons why.

1. You'll Make Some Room

Your phones and tablets are probably drowning in downloads, like music and movies. They might also be busting with photos and home videos of the kiddos. Take some time to back up those items on your home computer or external hard drive and delete those items off your device.

2. You'll Be Inspired to Make Some Prints

This is also a good time to go through that mountain of photos on your smartphone and do something with them. Print them out and frame them. Make a photo album using one of the many online photo sites. Or put them on a digital photo frame that runs endlessly in your home. The point is that you’ve taken the photos, now show them off!

3. You Might Even Want to Make Some Movies

The same goes for those videos you’ve taken of the kids’ ballgames, recitals, school plays, and those epic family vacations. Pop those videos into a simple editing program, select the most memorable shots, and start making some home movies. Once you burn them to a DVD, you’ll have a family memory that will bring good feelings for years to come.

4. You'll Help Protect Your Identity

We live on our phones and we store all sorts of information on them that we don’t want others to see. Some of us use our phones to pay for items. Some of us use our phones to do our banking. Some of us use our phones to send private information through email and texts. If you take the time to delete some of that information, you will be protecting yourself, should you lose your phone or have it stolen.

5. You'll Save Your Devices

When you eat a big meal, the last thing you want to do is go run a 5k, right? The theory also applies to your devices. After you load up your phone or tablet with pictures, videos, songs, and movies, those items move a lot slower. By unloading all that filler on your phones, your devices will move more quickly and you’ll probably extend their life.

6. You'll Probably Need to Upgrade Software

This is also a good time to check for software upgrades for your devices and since you’ve just offloaded so much content, you should finally have plenty of space to perform those updates.

Here’s another thought: If you haven’t already, invest in a hard drive to hold all of your stuff. You get a terabyte hard drive (which is a massive amount of storage) for less than $100. You can back up several devices on it and it will last you a long time.
