Toddlers and preschoolers love craft projects more than children of any other age, and December is the perfect time to make crafts that celebrate the joy of the season. Need ideas? I've rounded up four Christmas craft projects that you and your little one will love!

Christmas Handprint Crafts

At Thanksgiving, the handprint turkey is the classic craft for toddlers. So why not adapt it for the Christmas season? Handprint Santas, Christmas trees, and reindeer are fun and easy to make, and can be made into great gifts for little people to give. Christmas handprint crafts can become holiday cards, ornaments, aprons, ceramic plates and mugs, calendars — you're only limited by your imagination!

Sponge-Painted Wrapping Paper

Gather a roll of white or brown wrapping paper, washable paints in holiday colors, and either compressed or regular kitchen sponges. You (or an older child) can cut holiday shapes out of the sponges, and then your little one can go to town sponge-painting some beautiful wrapping paper for all your holiday gifts.

Festive Gumdrop Trees

Get your toddler or preschooler involved in decorating your home for the holidays with these Festive Gumdrop Trees. Sticking gumdrops on toothpicks and then using them to decorate styrofoam cones and balls is just plain fun, and it's also a great way to work on fine motor skills.

One word of caution: be sure to supervise this craft carefully since there are pointy toothpicks involved, particularly if you have a very young toddler.

Christmas Tree Ornaments

Making your own ornaments is one of the very best holiday crafts. Salt dough ornaments are always a hit, since you have the fun of mixing, cutting shapes, baking, and painting all rolled into one. (Hint: Most craft stores also sell ready-to-paint ornaments, if Mom or Dad is feeling lazy.)

Glitter Pine Cone Ornaments are also popular with the toddler and preschool set, and even more fun if you collect the pine cones yourself. For more ideas, check out this list of over 50 Easy Christmas Ornaments at Kaboose.
